Kindergarten
Through the letters of the alphabet, Kindergarten students will learn that a library is kept in a specific order. Students will enjoy a story time including crafts, puppets, or felt stories.
Big 6 Research is a six step process to teach students how to research. In Kindergarten, students are introduced to the concept of books being used for information. As a grade level, students will identify information from a book to construct an outcome such as a zoo animal.
First Grade
First grade students will learn that books are arranged by the author’s last name. Students will learn about a new author each week and where to find his/her books in the library.
First grade students are introduced to the word “research”. As a class, students will identify factual information from a book, and publish an outcome.
Second Grade
Students in second grade will learn all about the Dewey Decimal System and the different sections of the library. At the end of the year, students will go on a treasure hunt to find books in all the sections of the library.
Second graders review the word research, and are introduced to the Big 6 Research process. Working with a partner, students will identify and arrange information (in their own words) from a paragraph to publish.
Third Grade
In third grade, students will learn our online catalog system, and will be able to independently search and locate a book from any location of our library. Third graders will study the reference area of the library to better understand which resource to use when researching.
Third grade students review and practice using the Big 6 Research process. Students will research using more than one resource (book and encyclopedia) to obtain information. Individually, students will follow each of the Big 6 Research steps to locate, interpret, and organize information to develop a written and constructed outcome.
Fourth Grade
Fourth grade students will learn to independently search, locate, and evaluate books for research.
Fourth graders will review the Big 6 Research process. Students will be introduced to online databases. Students will research using multiple resources (book, encyclopedia, almanac, online resources).
Fourth grade students will enjoy participating in our annual Research Trivia game. This game is a fun way to master researching skills and learn new and interesting facts.
Fifth Grade
In fifth grade, students will review searching, locating, and evaluating the tools needed, both print and electronic, to use for research.
Fifth grade students will review the Big 6 Research process. Students will be introduced to using websites as research tools (RAD CAB Method). Students will research using multiple resources (book, encyclopedia, almanac, online resources, and websites). Individually, students will follow each of the Big 6 Research steps to locate, interpret, and organize information to develop a written and constructed outcome.
Fifth grade students will participate in our Young Authors and Illustrators Club through ACSI. Each student will write, illustrate, and publish a book for competition.
